How to See 4 Countries and 6 Cities in Seven Days

The Norwegian Gem and 6 Different Cities in 7 days

In my opinion there is no faster way to see a number of European cities or landmarks than taking a cruise. Cruises are typically are the scour of the traveling world. But they sure are efficient!

I have been known to look down on cruising. You are on a huge floating hotel with thousands of people. The ship sets sail and passengers sleep and eat through the night. You then “pop” into one location only to stay for at most a day and then re-board to do it all over again.

Granted, a cruise is not the way to do a deep dive into a culture, region, or even city. The time alloted in one place is small so there is only so much you can do.

However, when traveling with kids and taking vacations as part of a regular day job, a cruise can be a real good option. I will use one of our first cruises while on expat assignment in Norway as a case-in-point.

How to Use an iPad as a Photo Backup Strategy While Traveling

20120615-055441.jpg

Just Chillin’ Our with the iPad on Vacation

Why I Use an iPad for Photo Backup While Traveling

I never thought I would say this, but the iPad saved my life once. Ok, maybe not my life but it saved some experiences I had in my life from being lost forever.

Let me explain. We all know that photos are the life-blood and “memory stick” of our vacations. They allow us to remember those experiences over and over again. It always amazes me that just by looking at pictures from previous vacations I can vividly remember those experiences and adventures.

Some of our best family time is when we are just reminiscing about previous travels while looking at pictures through the Apple TV.

We also know that technology breaks down and that $40 memory stick in your camera that cost a company $2 to manufacture will break. The question is not if, but when.

When Cindy and I were in New York last year, this exact thing happened to us. Due to my great foresight and planning (read: luck) I had just bought an adapter for the iPad that allowed me to take the pictures from the card and plop them onto the iPad. My thinking was that it would be a cool way to review the shots I had taken during the day.

I did not plan on using it as a backup device.

How to Use the iPad as a Photo Backup Device While on Vacation

Now with the release of the iPad 3 and the retina screen, pictures viewed on the iPad are more vivid than ever. Even better, with enough storage space on the device, you can backup all the pictures you take on your many cameras, as long as they use a memory stick.

With the newest iPhones and the advent of iCloud, pictures you take on these devices are automatically sent to the cloud which means you will have an automatic backup. However, if you have other cameras in your family (such as the multiple cameras we bring), and those cameras use memory sticks then you need to consider an alternative backup strategy.

If you want to ensure that you have a backup of your shots while traveling, then here is the technology and the process you might want to consider.

The Technology!

1. An iPad; pretty obvious, but you will need an iPad or iPhone to make this work. If you can swing it, try to get the one with the highest amount of storage. As of this writing, that is the 64gb version.

2. The Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit. This is the kit you will need to get the photos off your memory stick and onto the iPad.

The Process

Here is the process I started doing in New York and it saved my bacon. Basically you need to plug the camera’s memory card into the Camera Connection kit and plug it into your iPad and let the device copy all the pictures from the memory stick.

Here are the steps you should follow:

1. Each time you get back to your hotel, or every couple hours if you are carrying your iPad around, plug the memory stick into the iPad and download all shots to the iPad.

2. When asked, DO NOT erase the images on your memory stick. Keep them on there until your trip is done.

3. Repeat every chance you get.

You now will have all the pictures on your memory stick, and a copy of those shots will also be on the iPad.

With this process, as simple as it is, you now have two copies of all your shots in case something happens. If you keep your iPad back at the hotel in the safe, then even if your camera gets stolen you will have the shots up to your last backup.

This has worked very well for me since we started doing it. If there are other strategies you use, please comment or Twitter your suggestions to @ourtripto.

How Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa Made Our Disneyland Vacation Easier

A Disney Vacation is Very Hectic and Busy

The risk with a Disneyland vacation is the pace of the holiday. There are vacations that are very relaxed and there are vacations that are very hectic.
There is so much to see at Disneyland that it often feels that it is impossible to cram everything into the time you have there. In my conversations with many people who have attended the parks, the typical length of a Disneyland vacation is 3 to 7 days.
With Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the hotel pools if can seem that there are not enough hours in the day. The implication is that the pace of a Disney vacation is quick which quickly tires family member young and old out.

Overview of the Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel

There are three Disney hotels in the Disneyland resort area. The Disneyland Hotel, the Disney Paradise Pier, and the Disney Grand Californian Hotel & Spa (DGC). The Grand Californian is considered the higher-end property of the three catering to those looking for what Disney calls more luxury-focused individuals. Note: We did not choose the hotel for the luxury but for the reasons listed below.

Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa = Less Family Fights!

The closest of the three hotels, it is a AAA Four Diamond hotel with three pools, a water slide, gorgeous lobby, a nice restaurants with one offering Character Dining, and a special entrance to Disney California Adventure. It can be best compared to the Wilderness Lodge in Disney World. However, the style of the DGC is Arts and Craft rather than strictly wilderness.

Hotel guests can choose from Courtyard Views, Park Views, and City Views. In my opinion, the best of the three is the Courtyard views. After the initial wow factor of the Parks View, the value is limited compared to the extra costs. We spend most of our times with the drapes closed as we sleep and shower while we are in the room. Other than those time, we were out in the parks or at the pools.

The 3 Ways the Disney Grand Californian Hotel Led to Less Family Fights!

As I am going to detail in my upcoming ebook, we make all our personal family vacation choices based on making things as easy and painless as possible. To be blunt, we want to minimize the friction that can lead to fighting that tends to rear its head during family vacations.

To do this, we will pay more if we need to but not looking to spend money just to spend it. Our vacation mantra is: Reward and Family Travel…with Less Fighting.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa allowed us to do this. There were four specific attributes of the hotel that were key to the success of our vacation. Let’s look at each of these individually.

1. Location, Location, Location

On all the family vacations I have been on, none tire out my feet more than a Disney vacation. The miles that the typical Disney visitor puts on is staggering. Add the heat and crowds and that is a recipe for some cranky times interspaced with pockets of wicked fun.

The DGC excels because it is so close to all the main attractions. Timing our walks had us to the entrance of Disneyland Park in 7 minutes. Even quicker was Disney California

My Son Waiting for Us Just Outside Disney California Adventure Entrance Connected to Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

Adventure and Downtown Disney. Each of these was 3 minutes door-to-door.

The true benefit of this was that our commuting to get to the parks was dramatically limited. Even staying at the other two Disney hotels did not get you this close. Granted they were not too much further, but far enough to be a consideration if one is looking to maximize time in the parks. If you stayed off property then you had to factor in much further walks or even transit options. We just didn’t want to deal with that hassle.

2. Special Entrance

Similar to location, location, location, but a benefit that warrants a special mention is the exclusive entrance/exits that are connected right to Disney’s California Hotel & Spa.  The closest is Disney California Adventure. This one is so close to that park that you can literally walk in and out of the park while still in the hotel.

To use this entrance to the park, you need to have a park pass. In addition, you need to show a Disney hotel room key. We saw a few people who tried to use this entrance without a Disney hotel room key and they had to turn back and go to the main entrance.

Although it is not exlusive to Disney hotel guests, the DGH is also connected directly to Downtown Disney. There is a seperate entrance to this area in antoher part of the hotel.

3. The Pools

You Can See the Awesome Chaise Lounges in the Background

A very common way to combat sore feet, tired kids, and two parents who are just trying to hold on is the afternoon break. There is no better Disney strategy than spending time at the parks in the morning / early afternoon and then heading back to the hotel for some R&R. The DGC excels at this partly because of the location aspects mentioned above.

It also excels because of the layout of the pools and the lounge chairs available.

There are three different pools. Two are pretty ordinary, basic pools with a lot of lounge chairs and umbrellas around them. The third pool is kid focused as it has a water slide. My family spent most of our time in the two ordinary pool as they are a bit older and the slide was frankly not that exciting to them. The water as warm enough to be comfortable (it is never warm enough for me) and the kids spent at least an hour in the pool in the peak heat.
For my wife and I, the bonus was the extremely comfortable chaise lounges and large umbrellas available. These were by far some of the most comfortable lounges I have run across. The cushions were about 9 inches think and soft. Couple with that an abundance of umbrellas (most hotels never have enough) and we were quite comfortable reading books and iPads while we watched the kids.

P.S. The wi-fi reached the pool area which was nice

Overall, for that afternoon break it was a real quick walk to the pool from the parks which broke up the day nicely and allowed us to manage how tired we got before taking a good break.

4. The Craftsman’s Club

On of my strategies, more which will be outlines in my coming ebook, is to utilize concierge service where available. By this I mean that you upgrade to what is called the Club Floor or Concierge Level at many hotels.

The Craftsman Club - Source disboards.com DmaxHawk

The Craftsman’s Club at DGC offers a number of services, many of which are listed below:

Access to the Craftsman’s Club on the 6th floor (open from 6:30am to 10pm)

Access to the Club Patio on the 5th floor

  • Continental breakfast in the Craftsman’s Club from 6:30am to 10am
  • Wine & cheese reception in the Craftsman’s Club from 5pm to 7pm
  • Nightly turn-down service
  • Complimentary beverage service in the Craftsman’s Club throughout the day (coffee, tea, juice and soft drinks)
  • Exclusive elevator access to the Craftsman’s Club
  • DVD Player in each room
  • Complimentary movie rentals
  • Table games available for use in the Craftsman’s Club
  • Complimentary fax services in the Craftsman’s Club
  • Dining and tour reservation services
  • Children’s storytelling – “Tales from the Hearth”

The Afternoon Snacks in the Craftsman's Club

From this list, the ones that made our vacation easier was the complimentary beverage service, continental breakfast, appetizers in the evening (wine and cheese), and the nighty snacks.

We had breakfast in the lounge four out of the five days, which saved us at least $50 each day given Disney prices. This also allowed us to eat in peace and quiet as we did not have to queue with everyone else.
More importantly, we did not need to make a reservation nor rush in the morning to make that reservation. We could leisurely make our way down to the lounge and have a too continental breakfast. It also gave us access to all the wine, pops, and snacks we wanted which kept the kids full through the day.

There were also some board games we took advantage of before bed as well as computer that the kids could use to check their email (if they got sick of using the iPads).

My favourite thing was waking up early and heading to get a cappuccino and catching up on some blogs while relaxing and enjoying the quiet time before the on slot of the hectic day began.

The Craftsman Club made things easier because we had the basics at our finger tips. No worrying about where to get snacks or drinks. We had them at any time of the day. It kept our bellies full and therefore kids happy. Well worth the extra price.

Key Take Away

The View from Our Room, with the Matterhorn in the Distance

You may have noticed I did not mention anything about the rooms.

The room we had had two queens, full ensuite, and a separate water closet and shower.  It was by no means that big, but we slept well (really good beds and pillows), and really spent very little time in there.  The other factors mentioned above were what won us over.

Some people value different things on vacations. For my family and me, we value convenience and ease, which reduces stress and the likelihood that fights will start because of being too tired or managing difficult situations. With the location, the good pools to relax in, and the added benefit of the Club Floor, we were able to better manage the hectic pace that comes along with a Disney vacation. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa deliverd this ease for us.

Key Benefits of the BMO Shell Gold Air Miles MasterCard:

Earn Up to 40,000 More Aeroplan Reward Points

There is a current promotion for those of us collecting Aeroplan points to get even more Aeroplan points. Today I took advantage of this promotion by transferring 20,000 Marriott Rewards into 5000 Aeroplan points, which will give me a bonus of 1000 extra Aeroplan travel miles. Not bad for 5 minutes of work.

Here is how the program works:

  • From May 21st to June 18, 2012 you simply enter a transaction to convert your frequent travel points into Aeroplan points using the loyalty programs conversion procedures.
  • Up until June 18th, you can continue to convert points and all your points will be consolidated to ensure you receive the maximum number of bonus travel points.
  • The partners you can convert with are CIBC Aventura®World MasterCard™ Card, CIBC Aventura® Gold Visa™, CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite™,CIBC Aventura® MasterCard™ Card, American Express Membership Rewards – Canada,BankAmericard® Power Rewards® credit card, Diners Club® Club Rewards®, Starwood Preferred Guest®, Hilton HHonors™,Marriott Rewards, Wyndham Rewards®, Best Western Rewards, Choice Privileges®, and Coast Rewards.

How to Get the 40,000 Bonus Miles

So where do the 40,000 bonus travel rewards come from?  To get 40,000 points a traveler would need to transfer in the equivalent of 150,000 aeroplan miles.  That is not an insignificant number of miles.  I couldn’t do it at this time, but as stated did manage to get 1000 extra bonus Aeroplan miles today.

The upside is that with 40,000 Aeroplan miles you could get an Economy ticket to Mexico or the Caribbean.  Alternatively you Apple iPod 32G iPod Touch for 30,000 miles.

The Strategy

My recommended strategy is to look at the points you have in the eligible programs.  If your plans involve flying with Air Canada or one of their partners than it might be worth considering transferring some of the loyalty program points if you do not have a better use for them at this time.  Of course, you need to look at your travel plans and consider what the best options for using all your loyalty program points is.

Requirements for Our Trip to the Atlantis Resort Bahamas

In June of 2011, my family and I took a trip to Atlantis Resort Bahamas. After a great deal of deliberation and research using Expedia Atlantis and TripAdvisor, we decided Atlantis Resort Bahamas was one of the best family fun vacation packages we were looking for.

Our Trip Requirements

When researching family fun vacation packages, we were after a few very specific things. Some requirements dealt with availability of time, cost, and activities for the kids. Perhaps it will be helpful for anyone researching the Atlantis Resort Bahamas as a vacation destination to see the criteria we used to identify this as one of the key family fun vacation packages we identified:

1. No Red Eye Flight

We have two kids 10 and under and even though both of them have been on at least 30 flights in their lives, the last thing we wanted to do was put everyone through a red eye flight. I have seen this too many times – people research family fun vacation packages and don’t think that the red eye flight is a factor. Seems like a quick and easy way to get to your destination! However, our experience is that everyone gets so run down by this that it takes 2 to 3 days to recover.

The downside to choosing not taking a red eye for us was that we need to do an overnight in Toronto on our way to Atlantis Resort Bahamas. We left late in the afternoon, arriving in Toronto around 8:00 pm. This allowed us to check into the Sheraton Airport Hotel, get a good night sleep and catch the first flight out to the Atlantis Resort Bahamas.

2. One Location Where We Had Everything in One Resort

Many family fun vacation packages are designed so that you need to do some extra travelling to really experience an area. We really wanted to relax and this meant that we would hunker down in one location and really enjoy that location. One of the beauties of Atlantis Resort Bahamas is that everything is accessible on the resort so if you really want, you never need to leave the resort.

3. Lots of Water Activities Available

Atlantis Resort Bahamas is all about water activities – well almost all about water activities. Essentially the whole resort is based around a large waterpark that includes a number of water slides, rivers where you ride on tubes and travel through rapids, and great big pools. Pretty much all of our days were spent in the water on the resort. There is also a couple of beaches available where you can swim in the ocean. There are many family fun vacation packages available that revolve around water, but Atlantis is a really good choice.

4. Access to Snorkelling

Although my whole family is not big snorkelers, I am and I was keen to get my son into it as well. As a 10 year old, he is old enough to swim in the ocean and breath through a snorkel at the same time. For our trip is was important that we had snorkelling as an option. As Atlantis Resort Bahamas is on the island of Nassau, which is world renowned for the scuba and snorkelling options. We chose Stuart Cove’s snorkelling adventure, and actually got to snorkel with sharks (more on that in future posts).

5. A Hotel Room with a Kitchenette

Atlantis on a budget is not something you will hear said very often. It is an expensive resort. That being said, we had a budget and needed to stick to that. One of the best ways to deal with vacation costs is to find a family fun vacation packages where hotels have a kitchenette. In our research we identified that The Reef Atlantis had very nice rooms with a kitchenette that included a stove, fridge, toaster, coffee maker, pots, pans, etc. This allowed us to top at a grocery store before arriving at The Reef Atlantis to stock up and eat a number of our meals (mainly breakfast and lunch) in the room. The cost savings were huge, even at an expensive place like Atlantis Resort Bahamas.

Summary

Picking a vacation destination is hard. However, we approached it with some specific criteria in mind an that helped us narrow our choice down to Atlantis Resort Bahamas. With all the family fun vacation packages available, this was one place we wanted to try. We were not disappointed.
